Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical Investigations

Geotechnical investigations typically use test borings to identify the subsurface conditions at the site. Our engineers then evaluate the results of the test borings and prepare a geoctechnical report that includes our evaluation and recommendations.

Test Borings

Velocity offers several types of test borings. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings are the most commonly used method of investigating subsurface soil and groundwater conditions. SPT borings are performed using a mechanized drill rig which can be mounted on a truck, ATV, tracked carrier, or a barge. If a drill rig is unable to access the site, shallow hand auger borings can be performed using manually operated equipment.

Foundation Analysis

Analysis and evaluation of foundation options for structures including shallow foundations, spread footings, and pile foundation systems.

Ground Improvement Analysis

Analysis and evaluation of the suitability of ground improvement methods including vibro-replacement, dynamic compaction, soil mixing, grouting, surcharging, and demucking.

Settlement Investigations

Investigation into why a structure is experiencing excessive settlement and evaluation of remediation options.

Sinkhole Evaluation

Investigation of the presence of sinkhole activity or cause of an actual sinkhole and evaluation of remediation options.

Geophysical Evaluation

Evaluation of subsurface soil conditions using geophysical methods such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), electric resistivity imaging (ERI), and seismic refraction.

Underpinning & Remediation Design

Designing underpinning and remediation programs for structures that have experienced settlement or sinkhole activity.

Vibration Consulting

Velocity provides consulting services to contractors to help minimize the vibrations caused by construction activities such as pile driving, vibratory compaction, demolition, and blasting.

Permeability & Exfiltration Testing

Testing to determine the rate at which water flows into or through the soil.

Laboratory Testing

Velocity’s laboratory is equipped to perform various tests related to the classification of soils and determination of their engineering properties.

Piles & Ground Improvement

Pre and Post Construction Structure Condition Surveys

Velocity performs inspections of existing structures to document their condition and existing damage and deterioration prior to nearby vibration-inducing construction activities being performed. Following the completion of such construction activities we can reinspect those structures to identify any new damage that may have occurred. Both video and still photo documentation can be provided.

Pile Installation Monitoring

Monitoring the installation of pile foundation systems and documenting installation parameters. Pile foundation types include driven piles, augered cast-in-place piles, micropiles, and helical piers.

Pile Load Testing

Analysis and evaluation of foundation options for structures including shallow foundations, spread footings, and pile foundation systems.

Ground Improvement Monitoring

Monitoring ground improvement operations to ensure they are performed in accordance with project specifications and documenting relevant parameters. Ground improvement methods include vibro-replacement, dynamic compaction, soil mixing, grouting, surcharging, and demucking.

Underpinning & Remediation Monitoring

Investigation into why a structure is experiencing excessive settlement and evaluation of remediation options.

Grouting Monitoring

Monitoring grouting processes to ensure they are performed in accordance with project specifications and documenting relevant parameters. Grouting methods include compaction grouting, permeation grouting, chemical grouting, and flow-able fill.

Vibration Monitoring

Velocity utilizes seismographs to measure and record vibrations levels caused by construction activities such as pile driving, vibratory compaction, demolition, and blasting.

Environmental Services

Phase I Environmental Site Assessments

A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I ESA) is performed to identify the presence or likely presence of contaminants on a property. This process includes obtaining and reviewing publicly available records for the site, performing site reconnaissance, interviewing those with knowledge of the site, and preparing a report.

Phase II Environmental Site Assessments

If a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I ESA) identifies the presence or likely presence of contaminants on a property, then a Phase II ESA is performed to further evaluate if contamination is present and to what extent. Phase II ESA’s can include soil, groundwater, and/or surface water collection and testing.

Soil Contamination Testing

Obtaining soil samples in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved procedures and delivering the samples to an analytical laboratory for contamination testing.

Groundwater and Surface Water Contamination Testing

Obtaining groundwater and/or surface water samples in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved procedures and delivering the samples to an analytical laboratory for contamination testing.

Facility Evaluation & Maintenance

Concrete Restoration

Identifying and evaluationg areas of concrete deterioration and/or spalling in an existing building and determining the appropriate repair methodology.

Pavement & Roadway Consulting

Evaluating the condition of existing pavements, determining remaining useful life and maintenance options, preparing pavement maintenance plans, and assisting Associations with their repaving projects.

Roof Consulting

If a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I ESA) identifies the presence or likely presence of contaminants on a property, then a Phase II ESA is performed to further evaluate if contamination is present and to what extent. Phase II ESA’s can include soil, groundwater, and/or surface water collection and testing.

Forensics & Building Sciences

Construction Defect Investigations

Investigating and documenting known or suspected construction defects. Typically performed in support of pending litigation.

Forensic Investigations

Investigation of the cause or causes of damage to or failure of a building, property, or component.

Expert Witness Testimony

Velocity has provided expert witness testimony for litigation relating to a wide range of engineering and construction related disputes.

Inspection Services

Velocity offers a wide range of inspection services, including: quality assurance / quality control, building, structural steel, welding, ADA, post-tensioning, underwater, and drone inspections.

Specialty Testing Services

Velocity offers a wide range of specialty testing services, including: concrete relative humidity (RH), concrete moisture vapor emissions, floor flatness and levelness, slip resistance, paint thickness and adhesion, spray applied fireproofing, and pervious paver testing.

Water Intrusion Investigation

Investigation of the source of water intrusion into a building. These investigations typically include a combination of visual inspection and water spray testing but may also require destructive investigation.
